You might remember our feature on Modern Fort last month? We briefly touched on a campaign that Modern Fort was in support of #IWANT2BE, well with the Fundraiser quickly approaching, we couldn’t resist the urge to share more. Before we jump in.. imagine never being asked.. “What do you want to do when you grow up?”
“One Girl Can’s mission is to alleviate poverty and create gender parity for girls in sub-Saharan Africa. It is well documented by global organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations that education is the only means to achieve this. Our holistic approach to solving this issue starts with constructing the school buildings that create a dynamic learning environment and attract better teaching staff to the schools. It follows with providing scholarships for students with the greatest need and potential at the secondary, vocational and university levels. And throughout, we facilitate mentoring and coaching programs that create awareness, confidence and critical thinking skills to the students we invest in.”
I was that girl who never appreciated my opportunities! I can say this now because I kick myself now at all the opportunities I miss out on because I didn’t care about my classes, I wasn’t serious about grades or even showing up on time. I skipped, I didn’t pay attention and now as I hit the spell/grammar check 4 times, I kick myself!
64% of girls are not enrolled in school.. that percentage is both alarming and heart breaking! No one should ever not be afforded these opportunities. Unfortunately, this is a reality right now, but it doesn’t have to be!
When we come together, we can make a difference and that is why events like this fundraiser are so important and we really hope that you will be there! However, should you not be able to attend, you can still donate! “This year we are building and renovating 4 dormitories and 3 washroom facilities for a girl’s school in Kenya with 530 students, and bed spaces for 372. With only 4 toilets nearby and no showers, you have to wonder how a teenage girl can manage to excel through 4 years of high school in these conditions. We aim to change this in one night.” Let’s help reduce those percentages and make that question.. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” a common questions that these girls can look forward to answering!
