Disclosure: We received this Osmo Coding Starter Kit in exchange for an honest review and are proud supporters of the Osmo Social Club.
The last few months have been filled with more screen time than ever before. Thanks to the Osmo Coding Starter Kit, that screen time hasn’t been all mindless button-pushing but rather coding brain teasers that get you problem-solving and becoming more forward-thinking.
Osmo Coding Starter Kit, comes with 3 games that will get your kids coding in no time flat. From leading Awbie through adventures to making music to share with the world, Awbie and friends take you through a coding journey that will leave your kids hooked on coding.
But what is coding? Coding is the process of using a programming language to get a computer to behave how you want it to. Every line of code tells the computer to do something, or in this case, Awbie and a document full of lines of code is called a script. Each script is designed to carry out a job.
I’ve always heard about coding for the bigger kids but I hadn’t seen anything like this that makes it so incredibly easy for the smaller kids to understand. The Osmo Coding Starter Kit speaks to both my girls in a way that makes them excited about learning in a way that gets me excited about screen time.
The Osmo Coding Starter Kit allows you to build skills block by block with 3 Hands-on coding games and is compatible with the Fire Tablet or Apple IPad. The Coding Starter kit comes with Osmo Base and clip-on reflector. The Clip-on reflector works with your forward-facing camera to scan the table. Simply draw or arrange the game pieces on the table in front of me and creations come alive on the screen.
The Best part? The Osmo Coding Starter Kit comes with 3 games so the fun begins within minutes.
Coding Awbie your best place to start, it’s one of the three included games in the Osmo Coding Starter Kit which allows your child to string together commands to guide the adorable character Awbie on an adventure munching on delicious strawberries.
Coding Duo is my girls’ favourite when they both want to play together as more advanced puzzles and doubles the fun with side by side puzzles that you can do solo or with a friend.
And the biggest hit is Coding Jam, both my girls love to arrange the coding blocks in patterns and loops to compose their music and then share them with their friends. I giggles and the fun the girls have while creating their beats like their DJ dad is one of my daily favourite things.
One of the things that I really love about Osmo is that even though the Coding Starter Kit that we have is meant for 5 to 10, Ava at 11 years old still loves to join her little sister for screen time. It allows them to work together and figure out how to problem solve by putting their heads together.
Additionally, the Osmo Parent app is available for download so that I can monitor the playtime and see how many lines of coding have been written. I’m even able to break it down by games to see which Zoe is playing more of. The Osmo Parent app also tips and ticks when in each game for things to watch out for and how to get more out of the games.
Gone are the days of fighting and arguing, when the girls are coding with Awbie, they work together and love spending the time together. Finally, it’s something that both girls can do together and even though they are not exercising their bodies, they are exercising their brains and truly building priceless skills that will last a lifetime.
